_ Hershey fonts は DFSG-free なのか?

よくわからないので, とりあえずココにメモしておく.

Hershey font?

Hershey font は 1967 年に Dr. A. V. Hershey が US Naval Weapons Laboratory にいた時に作成されたベクタフォント. 原論文は

となっている(原文は手元に無いし, 参照していない).

その後, Usenet でフォントが配布されている. 当時の記事は参照できないのだが, Ghostscript が提供している Hershey fonts for Ghostscript によれば

USE RESTRICTION:
        This distribution of the Hershey Fonts may be used by anyone for
        any purpose, commercial or otherwise, providing that:
                1. The following acknowledgements must be distributed with
                        the font data:
                        - The Hershey Fonts were originally created by Dr.
                                A. V. Hershey while working at the U. S.

                        - The format of the Font data in this distribution

その後 hershey font には幾つか glyph が追加されているものの, ghostscript に同梱されている hershey の改良版は

% accents, accented characters, and various other non-alphabetics

となっており, Debian では non-free 扱いとなっている(なんて事を...).

なんで気にしているの?

Hershey font は幾つかの売り物の描画ソフトウェア - 例えば IDL などでも使われているし, 我が地球流体電脳倶楽部で作成/公開している DCL - GFD Dennou Library でも使用している.

DCL はいわゆる ancient freeware の類いであり, 「最近 BSD 2-Clause にしようよ」と(主に私が)ライセンスの整理をしているわけですが, そこで「hershey ってどうなってんの?」と疑問を呈したのがそもそもの発端.

DCL 自体は描画に cairo を使うようになって, システムのフォントを使って直接 PDF を出力できるようになっていたり (福岡大の乙部さんによる改良), RubyDCL や GPhys によって, Ruby を使ってデータの扱いと描画を気軽に/直感的に行なえるようになっていたりする (で, これらを野良パッケージとしてメンテ/公開しているのが私).

DFSG free なの?

ナイーブには「配布に関するの制限なので non-free だよね」だから non-free かな, と考えたのだけれど plotutils - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF) にも hershey が(フォントデータではなく, それを生成するプログラムとして)同梱されている.

んー...原論文の形式では配布するな, なのか?

はてさて(と, ここに書いてハンドアックスを期待するテスト). d-d@d.o.jp あたりに聞いた方が良いかな.

_ ruby alternatives dropped!

というわけで

Debian ではもう alternatives は提供しないよ!
/usr/bin/ruby は, 現在Debianでメンテしている ruby を指すからね
- 現状は 1.9.3 だけど, すぐに 2.0 に, ゆくゆくは 2.1 にするからね.
きりかえたい時には rbenv 使ってね
- だけど alternatives 消した影響で rbenv は今インストールできないんだ. ちょっと待ってね
